VolvoTango News and The New Years Day Polar Plunge!

Hello All!

As you know there have not been many VolvoTango's recently as the weather has not been so good. I was tempted to call one for last Wednesday evening out at the Pier when it was in the 50's but it was a little too damp and now we have the freeze! I will be in touch via email as to the next VolvoTango and hopefully the weather will give advance warning of it's warming so we can get it up on Richard Lipkin's Calendar in time. Also there are possibilities for indoors VolvoTango and I will keep you informed on how that is going. As usual, the best way to be informed is via email so please pass it on and please sign up.

BUT here is an offer and I need to know who will come. As some of you know, I am a member of the Coney Island Polar Bear Club, a winter-bathing club that has been around since 1903 – the same year El Choclo was written. Every New Year's Day there is a Polar Plunge and recently there have been literally many hundreds of people showing up and extensive media coverage. This event raises money to support families of children with serious illness, Camp Sunshine, last year $75,000 was raised. So here is the offer: You are welcome to dance tango with me out on the boardwalk for one half an hour from 12:00 – 12:30pm. There will be a professional sound system and DJ spinning selections that yours truly selects-TOTALLY FREE. At 1:00 the swimming begins. You don't have to swim! Later we will go for lunch at our little Russian Cafe we have been going to all summer. It is a nice stroll from Coney Island to Brighton Beach down the boardwalk and well I might be tempted to have a mini experimental VolvoTango on the boardwalk in the Russian neighborhood too on the way there. But there needs to be a reasonable turn out to do all this and I need to know if you will be coming as I need to put your name on a list to reserve space in the clubhouse which is heated and guarded so you may leave bags while dancing,or, if you are so daring, clothes there while swimming in your bathing suit. I will also be trying to arrange rides. This is a lot of fun and for a good cause. Plus it gives Argentine Tango a good boost and gets you on TV, not to mention the pelmeni(Russian Dumplings). I hope you will consider it. You must  RSVP if you want to participate and please pass the message on!

 Tomalo con soda!

PS: The best way of keeping up with this rolling milonga is to be on the VolvoTango mailing list!
